I am truly honoured to have had the opportunity to attend the GEA conference. As a first-year PhD student, this experience marked my first foray into an academic gathering of this scale, and it has been a remarkable journey of discovery. Before diving into my reflections, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Charles Sturt University for providing me with a bursary that enabled my participation.

The theme of this year’s conference, “Be the Change,” resonated deeply with me. Through attending various sessions and engaging in discussions, I found myself re-evaluating my views on gender and my own identity. Initially, I identified as part of the cisgender community, but this conference opened my eyes to a broader understanding of gender as being diverse and fluid. I came to realise that we should embrace and respect everyone’s choices regarding their gender identity.

Additionally, I had the privilege of meeting many fascinating individuals during the event. Each person brought unique perspectives, and the atmosphere was incredibly respectful. It wasn’t solely an exchange of academic ideas; we also shared cultural insights, political discussions, and personal stories. This environment of openness and curiosity was truly refreshing.

Overall, the GEA conference has been a transformative experience for me. I left with a new appreciation for the complexities of gender and identity, as well as a desire to contribute positively to discussions about inclusivity and respect in my community. I am excited to carry these lessons with me as I continue my academic journey and personal growth.
